Engravelled Gold Leaf

The Artist

Jean-Philippe Rigotti was born in 1970 in Savoie. He devoted himself to a discipline invented by his grandfather in the mid-1970s: engraving on 23.6 carat gold leaf.

With a desire to achieve a realism that enriches the original beauty, he takes inspiration from photographs. He deconstructs to then brilliantly recompose in a three-dimensionality that will stir up even more emotion. It elates the senses with the striking contrast between the brilliance of gold and the depth of blacks.

Although his monochrome works are reminiscent of daguerreotypes, his work has been strongly influenced by the emotion of Caravaggio's chiaroscuro and the genius of Pierre Soulages who challenge us with the power of blacks.

It is a technique exclusive to the Artist, who even today is the only one in the world to offer real three-dimensional work on gold leaf, scintillating and delicate works, but intense and of great depth.

Each engraving is allways unique, only one can be produce, the matrix can be used only once

It is for me both a great honour and a privilege to be asked to write the foreword to these two volumes of Aston Martin books covering the period of Aston Martin manufacturing from the DB2 to the DB6. I commend Etienne Dricot and his team on their tremendous, effort, the quality of photography with such attention to detail that makes these particular Aston Martin books very special.

About the author

Etienne Dricot was born 1964 in the Ardennes, grew up in eastern France, saw his first Aston Martin on TV screen with “The persuaders”.
Passing through London in the eighties I discovered these beautiful cars with shiny bodies and noisy engines. This was my first contact with the Aston Martin World. Back in France I looked for information about the brand and I met the president of AMOC Club Mr Audouin de Dampierre. He offered me the privilege of driving one of his Astons, a DB6 Volante. I catched the Virus.
On the advice of Audoin, I subscribed in the AMOC English Club in 1992. I started to combine my passion for photography with the new one for Aston Martin. During my participation in the numerous events of the club I photographed all the cars met, so far having more than 15.000 pictures in the photo library. It was in 2009 during the Bonham’s auction that in the middle of a chat about the brand's books that the idea arisen to make a book in our turn to share our passion for the brand.
Since then, I have oriented my photo research on specific models to complement my already collection. Ten years later, the first two-volume book covering the years from DB2 to DB6 is now available for sale.
